It has been quite a while since I last updated this blog. There were many ongoings that actually needed the attention of this space but I never got round to do it, procrastinating is at it level high.

But, for today's post, I can't delay it as Pastor Joe requested that as member residence, we ought to know that one of our fellow neighbour, Mr Peter Cheng of Precinct 2 passed away and that the people in Glenmarie Cove would like to extend our condolences to the Cheng family over the sudden loss of Mr Peter Cheng. I am sure he will be sadly missed.

It is sad that I have to post something so sombre after such a long hiatus.

Dear Neighbours,

Our very own kampung in a span of 3 years:

New resident and visitor pedestrian access gate. Anyone noticed GC feels breezier these few days?

Plastic and rubbish growing campaign in progress. It should be able to cover the overgrown "lalangs" real soon.

New aesthetic facade.

This is what we call drawing attention and publicity to GC. Errr, where are the fire hose and sand buckets within GC compound?

Guess what? We as residents can do something abouut GC before it turns out like this.

It's your prerogative. It's your home. It's your chidren's home. It may be your third generation family home. It's our home. It's our community. So please voice your concerns and possible solutions (if any) with the new Pro-Tem Committee by emailing me so that I can compile and tabulate your concerns and forward them to the respective Precinct street representatives during the next coming meeting.

One Big Happy Gathering

What do one feel from looking at this following picture?

I believe the laughter tells it all, doesn't it? The GC as we know of is ONE BIG HAPPY FAMILY, for those who cared to be part of the family. Beside the obvious feasting, the one thing that is priceless is the joy of each other's company that is hard to find elsewhere. No one would believe that most of us here depicted only knows each other for less than 3 years in total (as of date of writing). Looking at these pictures, it seemed like we all have known each other all our lives and that is one of the greatest ingredients for a comfortable and satisfying friendship.

You know, it never ceases to amaze me how some people can be so shallow minded and so dirty that they have no qualm of abusing the environment and leaves behind rubbish, just for the sake of irritating others and inviting pests. I wonder if their own house is pests infested or probably, they are themselves one, thus their uncivilised behaviour??

A picture tells a thousand words, look at it yourself and decide whether we want to be like this, shall we guard against irresponsible people like this and shall we counsel them if we come across them? I have had my share of cleaning up my surroundings, on occasions when some contractors throw styrofoam containers indiscriminately after their lunch, while doing renovations.

If these type of people can't take care of common public properties, then, these type of people should be banned from using the said facilities. They should be ashamed of themselves, whoever they are. - webmaster

Looks like a resident is bent on making GC look like a rubbish dump. If left unchecked it'll eventually end up like a land fill.

Dear litter bug, where's your civic mindedness and conscienctiousness? You should not even be doing this. (Imagine this to be your own backyard, garden or lawn - Ed)

Tell you what, if you can't clean after yourself please get yourself a maid to clear the nasi lemak wrappings, drinks and whatnots and also scrub the jetty floor once you've done with the gutting of the baits. And make sure the rubbish is thrown into your rubbish bin, yes, your OWN rubbish bin and INTO, not on top or outside the bin cos stray dogs will litter your neighbours' compound which is quite unfair to them (them as in your neighbours, not the dogs)

Also, in case you are unaware of this, fishes don't eat cigarette butts so please don't throw them into the river cos they don't grow like kangkong either. (probably their parents didn't teach them - Ed)

Oh, don't thank me for pointing out your shortcoming. I'm just playing my part to make sure you are aware that I and all the other residents here love and appreciate this neighbourhood and we hope you would too someday. (well, if they don't, at the very least, don't make people HATE them, right?? - Ed)

ERIC YONG'S DINNER PHOTO

A few of us were treated to some nice home made food by Eric Yong and missus, way over at Precinct 2. As most of us just get to know Eric only during Taiso's birthday bash, not many people were aware of the small gathering but despite that, the regular kakis were all there. This following photo was taken by Nicky vide his NEW iPhone and can be seen in the photos were : the Yongs, the Moks (Penny face turned towards Doris), the Wees, the Ramayahs, Taiso and Chris (I don't know Taiso's surname, so, can't use the XXX in this instance) and Doris (the Mrs Santa Nicky-laus - partially hidden). Had loads of putu mayam and loads of vodka, most of us floated back instead of walked back, that's how much most of us drank. I was not too sure if anybody need dragging back, as when I left, there were a few still going strong with the liquors.

Any excuse just for the companionship and get together. The photo, sent by Tony Wee was a dinner do because Ian and Sharon happened to come a visiting to Glenmarie Cove. At this rate, Glenmarie Cove would really need a BIG gym and OLYMPIC SIZED swimming pools, to burn off the calories and whatnots. I will upload some get together do that happened at Glenmarie Cove during the Chinese New Year 2010 and some other happenings soon.

2009 came and went. 2010 is upon us. As any good Glenmarie Cove resident can attest, there is no special occasion that is greeted without any fanfare!!

So, we have a last minute decision to hold a countdown party. Kudos must be given to the "mobilising" team, consisting of Jeff, Cathy, Mary Wee, Mary Lowdik and Agnes. Jeff got the flyer flying, got the sponsors and many other stuffs, whereas the roses helped in selling tickets, roping in people to come and join in the countdown etc etc.

Overall, the night was quite enjoyable. And special mention to Joe for emceeing, Nicky for co-emceeing and Venod for getting all the hardware and stuff.

Well, I am not going to do the second by second counts, suffice to say, those who had something on that night made special effort to turn up, really better late than never. Glad to report that Precinct 2 people too came in full force.

Jeff & Cathy's Xmas Get Together

Jeff and Cathy hosted a Xmas Get Together together with Tony and Mary Wee as the co-host. It was just a small gathering with a handful of regulars who were able to spare the time, it would have been a bigger get together but for it was sort of impromptu kind of thing.

Quick Halloween Update

30th October 2009 - the Halloween Do of Glenmarie Cove residents.

Rain started at around 6.00 p.m. Our trick or treat was supposed to start at 8.00 p.m. And it had to rain on that particular day!!! By 7.00 p.m., I received a lot of phone calls and smses, confirming if the event would proceed, as many have already prepared for it!! I even sent out smses urging residents to help pray for the rain to go away.....apparently, not enough as the rain didn't stop at 7.29 p.m., as one of the resident said he prayed for. Probably he was being too demanding, that's why the rain continued.

Anyway, rain or no rain, the show must go on, as they always said. Left with no choice, we proceeded to Sri Santai for some games for the kids. The original venue was to be at the boardwalk at the Precinct 2 border. That would have been lovely with ample space and cool breeze. As it happened, we have to make do with Sri Santai (which incidentally, it would have been great if we have a club house with covered area for such gathering, right?? where's our clubhouse?)

But credit must be given to some of the management and guards who let us use the place and assisted with some things.

Needless to say, it was a very stuffy and restless games. No choice lah, sky was pouring out buckets of water.

When the rain stopped, we ended the game and started our trick or treat events. I must say that the team leaders, namely :- Andy (Albert and Agnes' son), Caleb (Capt Ng and Maria's son) and Raja (Thana and Sheela's son) did a very good job and was very responsible throughout. I really really have a lot to learn from these parents who educated their offsprings so well that I felt ashamed of my parenting skills!!

Just a quick note.

The season to be merry is here again. As known by all and sundry, Halloween Do is this coming Friday. But before that, we have had like, so many get together and that I have forgotten to take good photos to keep the sweet memories.

On Deepavali day, the few of us went over to welcome our new neighbour, Ms Chandra and we were treated to some unforgettable fare. We did have good time chatting though, I wonder whether Chandra has gotten over the shock over our "impropriety"

Last Friday, our ex-Glencover, Genesh held an open house, his wife Prames cooked fish head curry and I would name it, Devil's Crab, which both were very delicious. I think, Glencover are really merry kaki. In fact, I could count that practically, everyone, who are closely knitted were there. It was sort of like an outing even for the Glencover, mind you, we have to drive like 15 - 20 minutes to reach there. But the food and the company is very well worth it.

The very next day, there's the open house at Rajan's over at Damar Laut 2A. Approximately, the whole village were there, having good time with good food. There's the usual fare of briyani but the best was the mobile rojak vendor engaged by Rajan. Probably our head of social event will consider this for the future Glencove events??

Oh, prior to that, a group of Glencovers made it to Kuching and had a jolly good time there. Not to be outdone, the good people who couldn't go there had a feast all to ourselves, though initially it was supposed to be dutch, in the end, Nicky and Doris spent on our....pai seh only.

This was where we all had our superlicious yummilicious curry fish head and Chillies Crabs (I think, for the past week or so, we were all overloaded with curry, curry and more curry - I think until today, I have yet to fully digest all the foods that has been stuffed in mercilessly.)

Gosh, they finished the fish head including the bones!

By the end of games, after the children are tucked in, the adults are most welcomed to hang around

the Senangin Pier for light refreshment and a cuppa but have to BYO foods, drinks, mats AND most

Hopefully, all the houseowners will get the candies and whatnots ready for the eager kids (and

big kids like us) - so, it is all system go :- Light Camera Action!!!

Upcoming Halloween Trick Or Treat

Plan is underway for another round of trick or treat for the kids and grown-kids of Glenmarie Cove. Social Head Agnes and her lovely assistants Mary Lowdik and Shelley is assisting, if I am not mistaken.

Kindly take note then, that the event will be held on the following :-

DATE : 30 OCT 2009
TIME : 8.00 P.M
VENUE : meet at Senangin Pier
DRESS CODE : be imaginative lah, it's Halloween Do!

I have some games planned for the kids and grown-kids, so, do come and enjoy. To the grown-kids, participation is welcomed but no prizes for them, only for the genuine kids :P

Residents, please do take note, get lots of candies, or chocolates, or drinks, or fruits for those hardworking kids!! Don't be caught off-guard like last year. You might have to raid your fridge if you were not prepared (like some houses did, last year) and do spend time to chat with some of the kids and/or their parents.

Like last year, we will try to split the kids into 3 teams, so, expect to treat at least 3 times, don't go to sleep after the first tricksters come a calling.

Lastly, for those who have cameras, please don't miss the opportunity to take photos. Oh, and please, please email them to me, you know how to get hold of me.

Tony and Padma Birthday Get Together

What a looooooooooooooooooooooong evening!!!!!

Everyone started gathering at Agnes's at around 3.30 onwards. Let me give a short rundown of the YUMMILICIOUS and "scale-breaking" foods brought by our resident chefs. I don't even dare to step near my weighing scale and it seemed that most weighing scale in GC will be resting for at least 2 - 3 days before those weight piling food gets burned off.

Che Jam and Naser - butter cake

Mary Lowdik - a cocktail of fruits

Penny - cream puffs

Joe and Stella - "tong sui" and pulut hitam

Saran and Anita - bread pizza

Taizo and Chris - pancakes

Mr & Mrs Chew - icecream potong

Cathy - muffins

Albert and Agnes, beside hosting, also supplied endless milk tea and chinese tea, tong sui, whiskey. I don't know who supplied the wadey and chutney, would the supplier please buzz me so I can give credit where credit is due? It was one of the first to be gobbled up.....Of course, not forgetting the cake a few of us shared, CHOCOLATE INDULGENCE!!!

So looking at above goodies, anyone have any idea how many calories and kilos we piled in that one afternoon?? Hmmm...Oh, and Azlan rushed all the way from a wedding invitation just to join in the get together and not long afterwards, Anusia and Venu dropped by.

It was supposed to be a surprise birthday get together for Tony's 1st Birthday with the neighbourhood's friends. I should have known better than to ask Mary Wee to "mislead" him, I guess being married for that many years, Tony would be able to read Mary like a book........nevertheless, thanks to Tony and Mary for being such a sport.

And we found out earlier of the day that Padma will be celebrating his birthday in 2 - 3 days time, so, we made it a joint birthday celebration instead and I guess, in a way, we succeeded in giving a surprise to at least one of the birthday boy.

I must make note for better co-ordination on the "surprise" part in the future, it seemed.

Some friends left early, some stayed on. And we adjourned to dinner, initially planning on porridge as everyone was saying how stuffed they were and the first restaurant we went to, the food didn't come out after an hour and we switched restaurant. By the time we have eaten, it was 10.30 p.m and we got home around 11.00 p.m, I think.

It was overall a very nice get together and outing and time really flies when you are out having a good time with like minded people.

Glenmarie Cove Also Got Talent!!

......and this was proven on April 18, 2009 when an invite was put out in our GMC Blog to witness a talk and demonstration by our very own neighbours :

1. Painting on candles and ribbon-craft by Bud from Road 2B.

2. Crafting of bracelets and necklaces from beads and semi-precious stones by Dahlia from Road 2A.

2. "Basics of Sailing" by Jeff from Road 2B.

A picture says a thousand words they say, so enjoy the photos:

Bud using acrylic paints and deft strokes from various sized brushes created beautiful Art on candles. Next, using various types of ribbons and gentle twists and folds, thread and needles, she created realistic looking flowers and foliage.
Dhalia, on the other hand, delicately assembled jewelry. With her tiny pliers, different crafts tools and nylon string, she was able to knot and twist assorted beads and semi-precious stones into colourful and brilliant bracelets and necklaces. For chokers, there is a wide choice of silver and gold plated wires to use as the base material.
Finally, Jeff explained very simply and clearly the elements of sailing. He took us through the history of the very early sail boats, explaining the layout of a modern yacht, the dynamics and skills of sailing and navigation, competition sailing and also covered the safety precautions necessary in yachting. A very active Q&A followed and it looked like many residents are willing to give sailing a try.

Tea and fellowship followed. while several women continued with their "hands on" learning the craft from Bud and Dahlia, the "Sifus"!

A very big "Thank You" Bud, Dahlia and Jeff, for so kindly sharing your talents with us. Thank you also to all who brought snacks for tea. To Anita, thanks for the crate of F&N Chrysantimum Tea....all gone!!

All in all, it was an informative and enjoyable gathering. Let's continue to build our Glenmarie Cove Community through fellowship and affirmation.

Wah, I didn't know got one Guru-ji living just next to me, today got TOTO draw, any number to buy, Guru-ji?

The part about the car and the tree, I think that was a freak accident lah, accidents do happen. But a little extra precaution wouldn't hurt. Luckily the bedroom was spared though.

I think we really need to put forth some of our ideas and not only put forth but to "put our foot down", so to speak. Like the thieving that happens, if nothing is done to beef up the security, the thief (ves) would get bolder. I want to suggest that the control room be moved from Sri Santai to the second guardhouse. Presently, there are at least 2 guards (I think) GUARDING Sri Santai, presumably one at reception and one at control room, which incidentally is not visible. I think our side need more guarding than Sri Santai, right? And moving the control to 2nd guard house will ensure that no-one sleeps in their job, as there will be residents going in and out all time all day, at least we would know for sure someone IS indeed monitoring the monitor?? And by doing that, there will be one spare guard who can walk the precinct instead (2 moved to 2nd Guardhouse means will have 3 guards there, in day time and 2 in night time - remember 2nd Guardhouse normally do not have guards past midnight?)

And also, easier for the guards to monitor vehicles coming in and out. Oh, I think we really must insist that all cars, without sticker must have "VISITOR" board, big laminated ones, like Ambang's displayed on the screen. I think we really have too many unauthorised cars inside our precinct. Those cars without sticker, be it the residents' sticker or visitors' sticker, the security must check what is the car doing there?

Lastly, about cars speeding in the precinct, well, can I suggest that Nicky's GCERT team be tasked to track down those crazy drivers and give them some advice? I would suggest Joe as the head to speak to them, hehehe as he ought to be fantastic in councelling and advising, right? But go in a group to show that it is a community concern, not individual....I know I drive mostly below 30 after "listening" to Uncle Joe's advise (though am guilty occassionally for exceeding that, but never 40 km/h) but yeah, after the good "washing" from Uncle Joe, though was aimed generally at those responsible for driving like a maniac in an unfenced areas with kids, I felt compelled to drive below 25 km/h once I passed the 2nd guard house. After all, like he said, we are home, what's the rush?

Yeah well said Venu. I really like the "bedroom part" Luckily there was a tree. Imagine to our horror if one of our residents are driving inside GC towards the 2nd guardpost and that white car had missed the tree and flew right into GC's compound smashing into the poor GC driver. What happens if it was one of the GC resident cycling or kid walking back and the car rammed into the cyclist/kid and the impact caused the cyclist/kid to be flung into the lagoon and drown? Ya, my imagination running wild here eh? Or maybe I'm such a pessimistic person? Guess not cos my intuition/foresight is great and it's always ahead of time. Remember I was so upset about the sleeping guards and that we ought to beef up security blah blah blah.....guess what? One of our unfortunate residents' home got broken into between 10pm and 4am yesterday while they were sound asleep. I don't like to say this but i have to...."I TOLD YOU SO!!!"

Apparently the the thief(s) scaled the wall next to Jalan Teluk Gong and there are no CCTV nor infrared detector (I'm not even sure the ones along the boardwalk still work or not cos nowadays no guards come running along when I go past the detector and also no guards are inside the control room at night) along the perimeter fencing (anyone noticed lately that a guard was placed next to the Damar Laut boom gate?). Luckily only cash and mobile phones were stolen and no bodily harm occurred. I really don't understand why must the security team wait till some mishap to happen before taking the appropriate and necessary steps and fire fight instead of adopting a "prevention is better than cure" attitude?

Please fight this cause with me. Let's all insist that GCD erect those fences similar to the ones that divide GC homes from the shoplots and make sure that the top edge is pointed outwards and secured with barb wires from the 1st guardpost right up to the shoplots. These fences should be at least 15 feet high. This should help keep trespassers from scaling the existing 8 foot wall as well as to soften the impact if any vehicle came smashing into GC compound or the retaining walls.

Please please please also insist that 2 guards be stationed at the 2nd guardpost (to keep each other company and not falling asleep as well as back up support) and to salute and be alert at all times instead of pretending to be doing something on the desk whenever we approach or be asleep and all visitors to handover their driving licences in exchange for a visitor access pass and that under no circumstances should any guard be allowed to tap their access cards for anyone including residents be it entry or exit purposes. Let's all do this in unison. If any gurads are caught sleeping or not attentive, please blare the horn till they respond. Yeah!!!

I shall be posting new warnings when I receive strong vibes about anything untoward but preventable that is going to happen in GC. Meantime I'm going back to my cave to meditate. ohmmmmmmm zzzzzz *o*!* Hang on, I just received some weak vibes but have to tell you all this....please volunteer yourselves as GC Emergency Respond Team (G CERT) as thieves and their accomplices may be staying low for a month or two and then become more brazen and daring and trespass in groups right under our ever sleeping guards radar. So with a phone call away, all must respond. Or perhaps if we all sound our car alarms that will be our cue!!!

I think GC should not mislead potential buyers and state in their brochures/tidings about how good their security is. Like how they misled us. Sooner or later, instead of "HIGH" security it'll end up as "Hi" security where one can just wave ones hand and the guards will let one in.

Israeli researchers find way to make cancer cells self-destruct

At first, Benny Zabidov, an Israeli agriculturalist who grows greenhouses full of lush spices on a pastoral farm in Kfar Yedidya in the Sharon region, couldn't understand why so many cancer patients from around the country were showing up on his doorstep asking for fresh lemon grass. It turned out that their doctors had sent them. 'They had been told to drink eight glasses of hot water with fresh lemon grass steeped in it on the days that they went for their radiation and chemotherapy treatments,' Zabidov told ISRAEL21c. 'And this is the place you go to in Israel for fresh lemon grass.'

It all began when researchers at Ben of the Negev discovered last year that the lemon aroma in herbs like lemon grass kills cancer cells in vitro, while leaving healthy cells unharmed. The research team was led by Dr. Rivka Ofir and Prof. Yakov Weinstein, incumbent of the Albert Katz Chair in Cell-Differentiatio n and Malignant Diseases, from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at BGU.

Citral is the key component that gives the lemony aroma and taste in several herbal plants such as lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus), melissa (Melissa officinalis) and verbena (Verbena officinalis.)

According to Ofir, the study found that citral causes cancer cells to 'commit suicide: using apoptosis, a mechanism called programmed cell death.' A drink with as little as one gram of lemon grass contains enough citral to prompt the cancer cells to commit suicide in the test tube.

The BGU investigators checked the influence of the citral on cancerous cells by adding them to both cancerous cells and normal cells that were grown in a petri dish. The quantity added in the concentrate was equivalent to the amount contained in a cup of regular tea using one gram of lemon herbs in hot water. While the citral killed the cancerous cells, the normal cells remained unharmed.

The findings were published in the scientific journal Planta Medica, which highlights research on alternative and herbal remedies. Shortly afterwards, the discovery was featured in the popular Israeli press.
Why does it work? Nobody knows for certain, but the BGU scientists have a theory. 'In each cell in our body, there is a genetic program which causes programmed cell death. When something goes wrong, the cells divide with no control and become cancer cells. In normal cells, when the cell discovers that the control system is not operating correctly - for example, when it recognizes that a cell contains faulty genetic material following cell division - it triggers cell death,' explains Weinstein. 'This research may explain the medical benefit of these herbs.'
The success of their research led them to the conclusion that herbs containing citral may be consumed as a preventative measure against certain cancerous cells. As they learned of the BGU findings in the press, many physicians in Israel began to believe that while the research certainly needed to be explored further, in the meantime it would be advisable for their patients, who were looking for any possible tool to fight their condition, to try to harness the cancer-destroying properties of citral.
That's why Zabidov's farm - the only major grower of fresh lemon grass in Israel - has become a pilgrimage destination for these patients. Luckily, they found themselves in sympathetic hands. Zabidov greets visitors with a large kettle of aromatic lemon grass tea, a plate of cookies, and a supportive attitude. 'My father died of cancer, and my wife's sister died young because of cancer,' said Zabidov. 'So I understand what they are dealing with. And I may not know anything about medicine, but I'm a good listener. And so they tell me about their expensive painful treatments and what they've been through. I would never tell them to stop being treated, but it's great that they are exploring alternatives and drinking the lemon grass tea as well.'

Zabidov knew from a young age that agriculture was his calling. At age 14, he enrolled in the Kfar Hayarok Agricultural high school. After his army service, he joined an idealistic group which headed south, in the Arava desert region, to found a new moshav (agricultural settlement) called Tsofar. 'We were very successful; we raised fruits and vegetables, and,' he notes with a smile, 'We raised some very nice children.'

On a trip to Europe in the mid-80s, he began to become interested in herbs. Israel, at the time, was nothing like the trend-conscious cuisine-oriented country it is today, and the only spices being grown commercially were basics like parsley, dill, and coriander. Wandering in the Paris market, looking at the variety of herbs and spices, Zabidov realized that there was a great export potential in this niche. He brought samples back home with him, 'which was technically illegal,' he says with a guilty smile, to see how they would grow in his desert greenhouses. Soon, he was growing basil, oregano, tarragon, chives, sage, marjoram and melissa, and mint just to name a few.

His business began to outgrow his desert facilities, and so he decided to move north, settling in the moshav of Kfar Yedidya, an hour and a half north of Tel Aviv. He is now selling 'several hundred kilos' of lemon grass per week, and has signed with a distributor to package and put it in health food stores. Zabidov has taken it upon himself to learn more about the properties of citral, and help his customers learn more, and has invited medical experts to his farm to give lectures about how the citral works and why.

He also felt a responsibility to know what to tell his customers about its use. 'When I realized what was happening, I picked up the phone and called Dr. Weinstein at Ben-Gurion University, because these people were asking me exactly the best way to consume the citral. He said to put the loose grass in hot water, and drink about eight glasses each day.'

Zabidov is pleased by the findings, not simply because it means business for his farm, but because it might influence his own health. Even before the news of its benefits were demonstrated, he and his family had been drinking lemon grass in hot water for years, 'just because it tastes good.'

When someone gets diarrhoea, sometimes the solution is so easy, we wonder why anyone has to suffer.

The secret is in rice water.

This is already known in this region. Ask your maids -- Sri Lankan,Indonesian, Filipina and they would know about it.

(My mother) knew about it. When Dr Albert Winsemius came to Singapore for a farewell and thank you dinner in his honour, he brought along his wife Aly and his granddaughter, Jolijn. Both women came down with very bad gastroenteritis. They saw the doctor who gave them medication. It was slow to work.

Mother boiled some rice in lots of water and went to their hotel with two 1.5L bottles of rice water.

I cringed in shame at the offer of this folk remedy, which seemed so primitive to me. Never heard of this cure before. To my surprise, it worked, and they were even able to go out for dinner the next day. Both were exclaiming how the rice water did the trick of making them well again. Well, lucky it worked, I thought to myself.

I was discussing this some years back with Kim Ng, the ex-matron of KK Hospital. She said, yes, that is what Professor Wong Hock Boon, the notable paediatrician teaches. I was shocked and made some comment how could he? It was common knowledge so what had he to do with it?

Many months later, I regretted laughing at it. Dr Christina Shanta Emmanuel, who is the CEO of...uh, which group I have forgotten. Either National Health Group, or Polyclinics, or whatever.. regarded me seriously when I brought up the topic like it was good fun. She said that Prof Wong Hock Boon had presented a paper on it. At some conference. After he had done clinical trials.

Then his results were published in the Lancet, the Medical Journal all doctors read. In fact, said Shanta, he was credited for saving the lives of 2 million African babies by this method.

Ah, so! I am impressed.

It is rice water and not rice, that does the trick. I have found it effective again and again. You take a handful of rice and boil it in a large saucepan with lots of water. Like three or four large glasses.Then you cool that and drink the water. If you are in a hurry to relieve the ailing person, take the saucepan off the fire and dunk it in a frying pan or basin of cool water with ice cubes if necessary.

This gives the patient a chance to drink the rice water sooner and cure himself or herself sooner.

When drinking the rice water, make sure there is lots of it. You have to tell the patient that enough water must go in to line your guts from throat to other end, all 10 to 12 metres of it. If you take rice, it stays in the stomach. If you take broth, some of it may go into the small intestine.

But if you take rice water, it will carry rice grains to every inch of your small and large intestine to the end where the problem is.

Taizo's Birthday & Open House

Another reason to party...

It being a Chinese New Year and also coincide with Taizo's birthday, he decided to have a party and many of us were invited and of course, present ourselves.

The few of us decided to get him a barrel of beer, whereas other comes with their own assorted presents and whatnots. For us the beer group, our Mary Wee designed a very beautiful card and I got everyone who contributed to the pool to sign on it. This is what the card looked like, it was made with such TLC and written with so much sincerity that I think this card is one of the best I have seen so far.

It was a night of laughter, merriment and full of joy, peals of laughter were heard, people chattering the night away and there was even time for posing for some photo shoot!!

Chinese New Year Get Together

I can see lot of smiling faces, laughter and merriment going around. It was satisfying to see all these happy faces. Truly an unforgetable first time experience for us, the organising committee.

And special thanks to one of the cameraman, Venu, for capturing these precious moments.

On another note, we had another eating session, yesterday, at my place. I didn't get to call everybody because I don't have everybody's number, or probably some did not receive my sms or probably I got some of the numbers wrong. I was hoping that words would pass around, apparently, our Glenmarie's Residents are very private lot, we don't tell...the lot of us should be politicians instead, hahaha. I ended up with lot of foods and by the look of it, I might have to eat the same re-heated food for breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper for the coming few days...the horror of it!!!

A recap of people who spared their time were Anita, Patma & Sheila, Taizo & Chris, Taizo's parents, Jeff & Cathy, Ian, Teh & Pat, Nicky & Doris, Joe & Stella, Albert & Agnes, Tony & Mary, Mary Lowdik, Nazer, Mano, Thana, Azlan & Bad and a few others. Can't recall all of them. For those who did not, well, if ever, ever you all heard someone's organinising a party, especially with tent put up, AND one or two of your neighbours are invited, chances are, you would be welcome with an embracing arms, so, do pop in. After all, the food is all there and the company is there too..

I didn't take any photos but I believe someone did, if ever I get hold of it, I will put a link to it. Meantime, enjoy your new year, many happiness for the year and years to come, to my GC extended family, you guys are a great REASON for organising a party. I sincerely hoped that everyone had fun and I hope any shortcomings on the host's part will be excused, not executed.

Tick tock tick tock, it is like more than a week since New Year. Time do flies, don't they?

I got an email from Geraldine, who we got to know when Tony and Mary Wee had their Christmas party and she asked me to post her message to everyone. I have sent it to our mailing list, for those not in the mailing list, here is the message :-

Just a quick note to say that it was good to put a face to a name when I met you all over C'mas. Mom and Dad are always talking about 'GC this, GC that' so it was great to experience it firsthand.

It was really nice to see how close everyone is - that is, you all hang out together not just because you're neighbours and have to, but because you all genuinely like each other and want to hang out! And boy oh boy did I witness just how much hanging out you did. Seriously, think you guys were more happening and had much later nights overall than I did when I was back home.

I am relieved that the move from PJ to Klang has gone smoothly for my parents. At first we were all like 'Are you mad, you know how far away Klang is????'. Then when we saw the place we were like 'What, no grills?? Safe or not??'

But it feels safe in GC (and hope it stays that way too going forward). Mom and Dad have plenty to keep them busy so a big THANK YOU to you all for looking out for them.

Happy New Years to all and here's to 2009 being a good year for GC, as the community and it's members grow from strength to strength.

I wonder whether some of our neighbours would be interested to let their house interior's picture be taken and be made into a glossy magazine? I am trying to get a friend to do some photography and it would be nice to get a group, instead of my house only. Sampler of his works can be found here. Anyone interested? I am still trying to get the costing for printing it into a glossy magazine form. It will be interesting to see how, in the eye of artist, how our houses would be pictured?

On another note, I was informed by Sheila that Pastor Joe's church is on fund-raising drive and that, this coming Saturday, they will have a fund-raising dinner. I don't have much details, probably those interested to participate, or contribute, or purchase the tickets, can get in touch with either Sheila Padmanathan or Joe and Stella themselves.

Irregardless of your own personal belief, a good cause is a good cause and deserve some support, contributions in any form would definitely be a welcome. I am not Christian but for this good cause, more so because I count both Joe and Stella as friends, beside them being some of the more involved residents in our neighbourhood's activities, I personally will get a ticket in support of our friends' mission, "crusade" if you may.

I do hope that as in everything else Glencovers does, we will do Joe and Stella honour as their friends.

Countdown 2009

Pheww, for the organinising committee of this countdown party, we can finally have a peaceful sleep. My "investigation" revealed that a majority of us, yours truly included, have been having sleepless night for the few days leading up to the countdown party. There were so many last minutes loose end to tie up and finally, it was all system go and whether we did a good job or not, it is for the participants to judge themselves, though I must say that those who knows how to party, have a good time and those who are still shy, there is always next year.

I didn't have opportunity to snap pictures, but I do know that Zafri, Venu, Tony and a few others took loads of photos. So, while waiting for the photos, I will attempt to capture some of the moments of last night in here.

Before I do that though, I think our Event Head, Ms Agnes Lim deserved to be awarded a medal for doing a great job, she was the busiest person yesterday night and doing 1001 things, without which, many of the things would not have gone so smoothly. Her kids, Michelle and Andy manned the reception. Also, she prepared the finger foods when the caterer was delayed by an accident. Organising the event, taking the lead in the party and many many other things that I didn't notice personally but I know she did it, out of passion, responsibility and love for the community. A big bravo Agnes (you are staying on permanently on this job, I'd say)

Of course, the rest of the organising committee for job greatly done, I will list here and any good Glencovers should thank them when you all see them during your evening walk, gym time and whatnots.

a) Mary Westholt - for wrapping the presents and making the whole presentation looked like a million dollars!!! And walking around the neighbourhood with Sheila selling the tickets and promoting the event.

b) Nicky and Doris - for running up and down to buy things, get things organised, leading some of the games etc.

c) Mary Wee - for arranging the presents for the carollers.

d) Sheila - for aggressively promoting the event and selling the ticket, at the same time assisting Mary for presents et al.

e) Tony, Dahlia, Penny, Albert, Padma, Jeff and Cathy - for assisting in organisation of the event.

And a few others who chipped in but probably skipped my mind, of course, the things everyone mentioned above did was not limited to that stated, it was definitely more than that, I am just listing what little I can remember. Of course, not forgetting the sponsors for the presents, Ganesh & Prames, Rajan, Syed & Sharifah and yours truly lah of course.

The event started around 10.30 with speech from Penghulu. Then some game, some lucky draws and we were at the eve of the year already. A quick countdown by Nicky and lighting of fireworks, again, sponsored by Ganesh and Prames. Everything goes so fast that I don't really recall the chronicle of events, suffice to say that it went as well as I could wish for and I am really going to let the picture tell the stories, later, when I get the photos, of course.

But some of the guys stayed on after the event proper, I was with them until 4.00 a.m and I think, most of them would have watched the dawn of a new year by the riverside as it was only 2 hours to go for that view. We shall know later.

Well, that's about all that I am going to write about this party, until I remember more. I do hope everyone enjoyed themselves.

Security Issue - Tony's Response

My good neighbour Tony is an avid angler/fisher/fish catcher. Apparently, he has seen his share of outsiders in the precinct in unearthly hours and following was his comment to the security issue posted earlier (it can be found under the main post too) - I am reproducing what he saw and along with his suggestions that I totally agree.

Yes, yes Thomas. I agree 100%. The tight security is one reason we bought into this community, but recently there have been many "friends" who come fishing at the pier. sometimes overnight.

Perhaps one way is to insist that all who come in are not only registered, but that the host must stay with the "guests" all the time.

Another point to note is that the pier is often left very messy after their fishing session, and I have seen them climbing into the residents' boats. If they are residents and children of residents, we can always talk to them, but being strangers, its more difficult. Hope the Glencove CEO is reading this blog.

I share Tony's sentiment and now, knowing that they don't even have respect for resident's property when they are guests, do we still want to be lenient? What if they are no more resident's friends or if someone posed as resident's friends? It is food for thought and we are the long term resident here, our collective decision in this matter is crucial to determine what kind of neighbourhood we actually want??

Security Issue

The people in Glenmarie Cove really knows how to party and have a good time. One after another, we have drinking, eating, singing, jamming, gossiping, story telling and whatnots. A fine example of community living at it best. Slowly but surely, most of the main residents are getting to know each other pretty well and glad to note that, most do get along pretty amicably too, except for a few, which is common, as perfection is an ongoing process, if it is already perfect, then there is nothing to pursue anymore, right?

Well, during the parties, where I am pretty much a listener, I noted that many residents noticed that recently, there has been many outsiders coming and going at our precinct at their whims and fancy. Standards of security seemed to be going down. There has to be some sort of control to stop outsiders from coming in by just saying they are visiting a friend, especially at unearthly hours.

Even personally, today, I got back from a function in KL and reached the first guardhouse around 11.50 p.m. In front of me, there was a motorcycle. I saw the guard pointing to the Sri Santai but the motorcycle just turned left, without registering. I wind down my window and asked the guard, who were the two people. He told me that they were the friends of some residents, coming in to FISHING!! Apparently, he must know them, otherwise, how would he know they are just coming for FISHING?

I told the guard, why are they not registering at the counter Sri Santai? He immediately talked into his walkie talkie to ask the 2nd guard at the second guardhouse to turn them back to register.

My grouse now is this :-

At 11.45 p.m, can a visitor just be let in without verification with the resident? can the "visitor" just mention to go fishing and they are friends of A resident and be let in? It is fine if residents don't want their visitors to be hampered, but at 11.45 p.m?? Shouldn't the guard at least be calling the resident to verify and get the resident to vouch for this visitors? They are not even really visiting the resident but coming in to FISH, on the pretext that the resident is waiting for them. I think late night visitors should be subjected to more stringent procedure and may even need the resident to vouch PERSONALLY, or pre-alert the guards on late night visitors.

Also, what about the overnight visitors? (Taking this two fellows on motorcyle, if they are fishing, they would be "stay" overnight? Are we sure they are just "fishing"? Do we want to care?) Shouldn't the security be informed too by the residents? At least as a courtesy to other neighbours. We are all sharing the same precinct. Do we really want to wait for something untoward to happen before we put in all the precautionary deterrents? Do the residents want to cry over spilled milk?

I have also noticed on a few occasions that contractors (I am assuming it is contractor) that just come in, passed the first guardhouse and proceeded to the second guardhouse, without going to Sri Santai either. Then, they will wait at the second guardhouse for the security guard to open the boomgate for them. What I am not pleased about is that the guard DO open the door for them, probably they know each other well but procedure is procedure and it is put there for a reason! Start bending rules and regulations, that is where the problem all starts. On many occasions too, I observed that people leaving in cars and motorcycles waited at the second guardhouse for the security guard to open the boom gate for them. Meaning, they didn't register too, because otherwise, they would have their own touch and go key to slot in to open the gate!

I will definitely highlight this to the management and the security company, and our penghulu, after hearing it from fellow residents and observing it myself too. Most of the people in Glenmarie Cove are bought in the security and leisure lifestyles offered here. If we want to have strangers loitering around our neighbourhood, we don't have to pay a premium for our property and monthly security fees to get that. Any taman will have strangers loitering around anytime of the day and we can get that for free elsewhere for that matter, why pay for it?

Discipline has been wanting, rules has been bent, it is high time things are being righted. It is really a lovely neighbourhood with lovely people and we really don't wish to have any untoward incident to mar such a blessed place. Some residents might not like a strict enforcement of rules but if the majority requested so, the minority has to follow, that is called democracy and majority rules. The interest of the majority has to come first, I guess, though it sounded selfish but we just couldn't risk polluting a well just because some people refuse to take joint care of it? Granted, we are not under siege but everything starts small, to snowball into something that might be regretted later on. Nip it at the bud, like our penghulu always advised us.

Carolling Event on 23 Dec 2008

After sacrificing a few weekends for practicing, finally, D-Day was here and earlier this evening, the group of carollers went around the neighbourhood to bring the spirit of joy and sharing to the neighbours. I must say that though not all of us are Christians, but true to our Malaysian spirits, all of us, irregardless of religion turned up in full regalia to paint the whole neighbourhood RED, literally. Take a look at the preparation :-

And we have our own tailored-made in-house Santa Nicky-laus to boot, literally!!! Look at our Santa and you will believe that the REAL Santa will lose some sleep over the competition, if ever our very own Glenmarie Cove Santa decides to venture outside his territory.

As the saying goes, behind every successful Santa is a Mrs Santa, in our case, BESIDE our Santa is a Mrs Santa, like Malays saying, bagai pinang dibelah dua, loosely translated, perfect match made in Heaven...

The group made the procession to the first stop. The sight was fantastic with the RED uniform and lighted candles.

The first house, Jason and Ann's house. Following photo is the graceful hostess, who are so generous with gifts and foods but we didn't have the opportunity to really sit down and savour the goodies provided. I am sure, next round may be, we will finish off every morsel of it....

Then, we were off to Saran and Anita's house. I tell you, Glenmarie Cove residents really spoilt "us" - us, as in the ADULTS as well as the KIDS. I mean, who can resist good food, yummy food and great hosts? Really, you can see for yourself how the hosts spoilt "us" - it is a wonder that all of us didn't end up looking like future Santa with all these generous residents around...

By this time, like the Ultraman button on his chess, my "cap ayam" camera signalled that it was running low on power, so, by the time we reached Auntie Mary and Uncle Tony's house, I could only managed to capture some photos before the camera gone kaput on me. Look at the lovely couple, with Santa acting as the "street lamp"...hmmph....What a role model to emulate...the loving couple, I mean, not the "lamp-post"...he he he.

After that, we were off to Uncle Jeff and Auntie Cathy's place, then onwards to Uncle Rama's place, Auntie Viji is off to India, this time, not around to spoil us with nasi beriyani, otherwise, we will eat, again!! Who can resist Auntie Viji's beriyani?? (at times I wondered, where do we find the space in our stomach for so many meals in one session???).

Last but not least, we adjourned to Uncle Joe and Auntie Stella's house where the kids had their party and gifts from both of them and again, the host spoilt us with wine, beer, cookies, coffee (which I couldn't resist, keeping me awake at this hour, posting this evening's event) and plenty of deliciously, sinfully fattening cakes and pastries. I don't know about the rest of the guys but I do know I won't be looking into mirrors for the next few weeks after all this overeating!!!

Tony and Mary Wee's Christmas Gathering

Tony and Mary had their Christmas Gathering on 21 Dec 2008. Most of the usual people were there, with addition of two new faces, that is of Ernest and Rachel, Tony's immediate neighbour to the right and Tuan Zaid and Zarinah, the neighbour opposite me, who are based in Kuwait presently (who came despite their hectic schedule, just to say hello to the neighbours).

The party started with the usual makan-makan, good food, good company, good wine. Halfway through the night, all of us gathered in the living room and good ol' uncle Joe provided some guitar music with the kids singing some Christmas songs. Then, we had Chris singing a song, Pat and Sheila leading a dance, etc.

The host wanted the guests to play a game of "Know Thy Neighbours". The game turn out to be a huge fun because of "argument" and "contradicting answers" - where in the end, the owner of the questions will decide the final answer, hehehe, where the team of Wand To Be Tree (Road 1, 2B, 3) scored higher points against team Two Ayes (Road 2A).

One of the most argued answer to a question was the name of Cathy and Jeff's yacht, the answer was "Rapscallion" or as our team answered "Rapascallion" - the actual answer was Rapscallion of course, but we as got our answer from Cathy's sms, thus, we "present" our case as the owner themselves had given the answer, we couldn't be wrong, with proof to boot. In the end, we won though the other team was correct, factually but on technicallity, we won, hahaha. That is "the rule of law" for you!! hmm... I wonder if the court play by the same rule... scary....

There was so much to tell but I think, some pictures will do it more justice. At the same time, I managed to record some clips using my handphone, though I have to add that unless you are there, I doubt you would know who is who because the clips were soooooo blur....

My apologies because the video were side way, got to slant your head a bit to see, didn't realise the setting on the handphone were landscape at the time.

Hello All

I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who sent me the cared with good wishes prior to the race.

Cathy and I are now back in Glenmarie Cove and I just spent the day recovering from an at times exciting, enjoyable, frustrating, tiring but extremely satisfying sailing experience. The following from Asianyachting web site sums it up well:

Well what a marathon. Only sailors with allot of stamina on and off the water should compete on the Raja Muda Regatta. Sailing through the night, finishing in the early hours off the morning, consuming copious quantities of alcohol, raging around the night clubs at the stopovers, then going out and race again with little or no sleep for a week is why this event is called the "Most challenging regatta in Asia". This behaviour is normal on the International sailing scene and anyone looking for a Asian holiday with a difference, where they can get involved with some sailing activities should not go past Malaysia as the Raja Muda Regatta beckons each November. World cruisers are especially welcome as the island hopping nature of the regatta was specially designed with them in mind, to showcase the west coast islands and enjoy some good ole Malaysian hospitality.

The Rapscallion went well, the team were great (despite the combined age!), no major mess ups, nothing got broken and we placed seventh overall in class out of ten boats. Not a momentous result but the fun of the whole thing left everyone happy at the end and the parties made the event, particularly as Cathy and two other wives joined us. We didn't make the night clubs - those were left for the youngsters. Our tactical decisions in the passage races, always partly experience and partly luck, didn't work out quite right. After the first night we thought we had done well, at dawn lots of boats were behind and only a couple with higher handicaps could be seen in front, then with twenty minutes to go till the line the wind totally died and the tide took us swiftly sideways. We finished a painful two and a half hours later, while watching slower boats catch up as they found some wind closer to the shore. Second race, almost a repeat, although the no wind event happened a bit earlier. The Penang to Langkawi leg was fast and furious towards the end with 25 - 30 knots of breeze on the beam. All of the harbour races were pretty close but our competition was just a bit faster. Having said that we were against an out and out racing yacht and two others that had bought in professional crew. Hey ho! To add to all this we tried our luck in the trishaw race in Penang, not shure who won that one as the rules seemed to go out of the window!

Palace Of The Golden Horses

Just a quick one.

Today, the majority of the Glenmarie Cove P1 residents went to Palace of The Golden Horses to attend the wedding dinner for our new neighbour of Vennu and Anusia. Most of us car pooled, good for the environment!!!

Many of the folks of Glenmarie Cove wear some of the nicest clothes. Nicky says we should be in the Malaysia Tatler magazine, that my friend, if it happened, I will frame the picture!! hahaha. Here is some of the nice and graceful folks of Glenmarie Cove.

Overall, the banquet was something different yet similar, like what we deduced, fusion of culture is happening in Malaysia and that's the way it's going to be. The food is quite delicious. Many of us are Indian food kaki anyway and it suited our tastebuds.

By sheer co-incidence, the host put a few of the "kanak-kanak dewasa" together at the same table, namely Nicky and Zafri lah. The both of them was soooo sweet to the waiter that we got our first dish quite fast, and we don't even need the waiter to serve us, we are quite happy to just indulge ourselves. By the time our foods were cleaned of the plate, I noticed Mano and Thana's table is not being served yet....so, I guess, next time, must ensure to sit together with this two "k-k d" to get to jump some queues.

The Glenmarie Cove residents also wished the bride and the groom a "Tani" greetings (our version of yam seng for the nite!!) and the lot of us happily joined in. If I get the photos from Venu, then, I will post it, then, we can see the whole group cheering for the newlyweds.

Later on, Delia and Sheila joined in the dancing but have to cut half way through as it was quite late and most of us were tired out. For our two ladies, fear not, another dance party is coming, make sure you gals are around!!

Maiden Halloween Night 31 Oct 2008

Trick or Treat? (Updated with photos courtesy of Tony Wee, awaiting the rests)

Alrighty, I have some tricks and I have some treats too.

Firstly, the tricks, you guys have to wait for the photos of the Halloween Night organised by Glenmarie Cove Residents. 1st Reason? I have yet to receive them from the cameramen, ie, Tony Wee, Zafri, Venu the Werewolf. How about my own camera? Well, the camera fell while busy shuttling around the precinct and somehow, the memory card's lost it's memory, what an irony!!..sigh. It's very frustrating because I have loads of photos inside.

Now the treats. We had a FANTASTIC Halloween Night!!!! I would sum it up as a BLAST. The organising committee would like to express a big thank you to the residents of Glenmarie Cove Precinct 1 for the co-operation and kindness in treating all the children with so many wonderful candies, sweets, chocolates and whatnots.

The night started with registration and what a sight to behold. We have witches, draculas, vampires, pirates, angels and a few others. The photo will tell a better story, wait for the outcome from our cameramen.

The children were split into three teams and covered different roads at different time. I followed the three teams on different occasions and glad to report that houseowners / residents (most of us anyway) were very excited and quite a number dressed in their royal spookiness to scare the children. One houseowner even go to the extent of playing spooky music and stationing one "keeper" to "play" with the children. As in all things, some kids find that amusing and exciting while some others were scared stiff and cried, ah well, all in a day's trick or treat. To that houseowner, congratulations for the effort, you are truly one of a kind. I don't know which unit because I missed it.

Many houses instead of leaving only the porch light on, took the extra step to prepare Jack-o-lantern, pumpkins carved beautifully, or should I say eerily, and I took those photographs but unable to share it due to the reason above...what a waste. I hope the other managed to take the Jack-o-lanterns carved by our people.

Mike from DL 3 also dressed like the rest of his family member, for this night, the whole family decided to reveal their trueself, The ADDAMS family, albeit the blood sucking one.

The "ADDAM'S FAMILY" - Mike was at home waiting to scare the kids...

Parents and adults that dressed according to the theme too, were Agnes (the chairperson), Cathy, Ramasamy and his children, Sheila and a number of others whom I didn't get the chance to get their name.

The adults were complaining that they didn't realise that to walk the whole precinct was pretty tiring, I say to you guys, good exercise eh? If adults complained about exhaustion, imagine the kids. And the kids were indeed pretty tired, probably because there are still many empty houses and they have to walk long stretches with nobody to treat or trick. Let's hope this time next year, we will have more occupancy so it will be more bustling trick or treating for the kids.

I assure you that the kids got loads of candies to last them 3 months at the very least!!! Glenmarie Cove Residents are really generous lot. We hope that the residents shifting into the empty lots in the future will share the same spirit and generosity, in their candies and friendships, right?

After the houses has been covered, the children adjourned to the playground for some impromptu games. The parents and adults cheered them during the competition, pitting the team of Witches led by Tracy, Pirates by Andy Mok and Claws by Brann (am not sure about Tracy and Brann as they both looked alike, doesn't matter) against each other. It was really a very festive atmosphere with the encouragement from the parents rooting for their kids. It was fun to see the children playing games and it is really not easy to manage a bunch kids, phewww, am I glad it is over!!!

Anyway, when the game session was over, children safely tucked in, to dream of 1001 ways to finish off their loots without the parents' restriction, the parents / adults sneaked out and adjourned to the Senangin Pier for some chit-chat, catch up and gossips. The night owls consisted of Tony and Mary Wee, Jeff and Cathy, Ramasamy and Gee, Robert and Delia, Agnes and Albert, Shirley, last but not least, Penny and yours truly.

So, there were beers flowing freely and Agnes bought everyone a round of roti canais, roti pisang, chapati, chicken wings and Gee sponsored some fried rice half way through the rotis, everyone would have finished it off if not for the over stuffed stomach. Still, being one not to resist any good food, at least half of the fried rice were gone within minutes.

I brought along a canvass to be spreaded on the grass and everyone sat around and chatted until about 2.00 a.m. before we called it a day. It was a time well spent. Truly, it has been one of the longest night and hopefully, such high standard could be replicated again and again. I know some kids were asking when will be the next "party"...I wish I have that much energy too...Until the next updates...

Hari Raya and Deepavali Updates - Oct 2008

Just a quick updates.

a) Hari Raya came and went. We had a few open house in the neighbourhood, first one hosted by Syed and Sharifah. Right after having our fill of super yummy nasi beriani and nasi himpit kuah kacang here, the same group of neighbours then adjourned to the house next door, who happened to hold open house on the same day. The host is Timothy but I forgot the missus name, I think it's Sarimah or something. Someone care to correct me? Even though most of us have eaten at S&S's place, we just couldn't resist to have another go at Timothy's, the foods were just too tempting.

b) Today is Deepavali day and Mr and Mrs Rama (the bungalow unit near the lagoon) held an open house for the neighbours. Almost everyone who knows someone were there. Usual suspects, Padma, Jeff and Cathy, Nicky and Doris (I hope I get the name right), Albert and Agnes, Tony and Mary Wee, Mary Wesholt, Shirley and her husband, Mike (I am bad with names, hope it's correct) ; his first time to join the usual suspect ; Azlan, Zafri and wife (forgot the name, sorry), another Thomas with his wife, Brenda, I think and a few more ; missing is Captain Ng & Mrs, and Mr & Mrs. Taizo. As usual, the names above were the ones who would stay the longest, hahaha. I was there around 2.15 and left about 5.15. Talking about staying!!! Again, what else us Malaysians would do if we gather if not to eat (again) and Mrs Rama cooked very delicious beriani that some of us had like 3 - 4 helpings, you guys know who you are...

Anyway, we met the lovely children of Mr and Mrs Ramasamy. Their youngest daughter is getting married (Anusia) and we were all invited, it's a BOLLYWOOD themed wedding dinner, guests are encouraged to dress according to the theme and we are so excited to go, yeah.. I am excited too because I would finally have a chance to wear my Punjabi suit bought in Chennai, oops, sorry, got side tracked, back to main topic.

Anyway, after her wedding, Anusia will stay at the semi-D in road 2B, next to Tony and Mary Wee's. We are finally seeing some new faces in our area. By the way, my wife told me that the Wanita group planned to attend the dinner dressed like Aiswarya Rai and Kajol, I am soooooo looking forward to see Agnes, Mary Wee, Mary Wesholt, Doris and the rest of the gang in saris and salwar kameez.

I wonder if Nicky would be wearing "Dhotty"???

Both Nicky and I are Indian foods fan and we just found out that Zafri is also crazy about food. We got more kaki for eating expedition in the near future.

It is very nice to see such a friendly crowd and humble to the core, no stucks up around. Everyone is like old friend, I really admired these people. I hope there will be more get together to build on the good things we have going.

c) This coming Friday will be Halloween and Mary Wesholt and Agnes Mok has taken the initiatives to organise a Halloween party for the young (and young at heart), so, I hope everyone will join in the fun. I have bought loads of candies and I hope there will be lots of kids going tricky-treating in the neighbourhood on that day, otherwise, somebody have to volunteer to help me finish off the candies.

Lastly, the pro-tem had a meeting with Glenmarie Cove management and highlighted all the issues as mentioned in our letter to them. Mr Ng promised to look into some of the issues on hand personally. I think it went very well and we can look forward to many good things happening in our neighbourhood.

I believed by now, most of the Precinct 1 Resident of Glenmarie Cove would have received their copy of letter to the management airing our grouses and discontent over some matter and manner of things being handled.

Hopefully, very soon, the management will allocate some time to meet up with residents' representative to sort out the more pressing issues.

Meantime, pro-tem committee is in the midst of planning for an Autumn Festival or in Malaysia, it is more widely known as the Mooncake or Lantern Festival.

Please check back for more updates. Meantime, we hope that we will get the return of the contacts of individual residents soon to enable everybody to be kept in the loop. Please do inform your neighbours if they have not registered themselves to receive emails. Please do check in here periodically to keep abreast of matters that might be happening or planned for our community.

Neighbourhood's First Get Together

Hi there, we have just had our first neighbourhood gathering, the usual suspects were all there, as usual. Except for a few new faces, mostly are the ones who parties the latest and the noisiest, hahaha.

We hope to rectify the situation by getting the road-rep going door to door and collecting information and introducing ourselves and get them to join in the community so we can always speak with one voice and protect our interest collectively. Otherwise, if everyone only care for themselves, then the community will deteroriates and we become like just another normal taman in Malaysia, let's strive to avoid that. As it is, I think we have known each other names, more than from where we were originally from, where neighbours just practically do not see nor know each other. Let's not become like that, again.

Alright, some head up on the gathering. Let me just list down the people who were there, in order of their self introduction.

Just a quick recap on things mentioned, of which Mary will give the minutes, she is such a good secretary, thank you very much.

a) There is no security manning the second guardhouse for certain hours, it doesn't seemed to be a good idea but we will see how it goes
b) There will be one key contact person from GC to attend to any grouses we might have, Patma will let us know who once he have more information.
b) There will be a change of landscaping contractor, we were reminded to monitor the situation and do not allow for any slackening of the maintenance, for our own benefits.
c) Cleanliness is an issue and I strongly felt that the guard who do the rounding will have to monitor the contractors and workers because rubbish are definitely not created by residents.
d) Visitor passes shouldn't be allowed to be given to contractor, they have to get their own special passes.
e) Everyone will list down the defects they faced for other's to study and look out for in their own unit, meantime, all unattended defects will be complied and highlighted to the developer, so, please do compile your list and send them either to me, Mary Wee or Nicky.

Overall, the gathering / meeting was a success and we hope the momentum has been set to have more this type of gathering so we can share information and tips for our mutual benefits.

To those who have missed the party, you MISSED the party!! nay nay nay nay nay nay....

First off, the food, yummy. The food was much better than the last time, or rather, much better organised. And plentiful. We had, most of us anyway, overeaten and thanks to Glenmarie Cove developer, the gym would be very well utilised the coming few days to burn off all those excess fats!!!!

We have our usual members, the one I mentioned to my wife as the initial group, who always are among the first to arrive and among the last to leave, hahaha. Let's look at some of the photos.

Alrighty, I decided not to write complaints on the first two posts, this constitute the third posts, as such, moratorium over already.

As mentioned in the groups created earlier on (link found herd), I think it is not right that contractors should be using visitors pass to enter into the neighbourhood. As I mentioned in the other place, my sister had to wait for quite sometime before she can get a visitor pass, reason being the Seri Santai is out of the visitor and touch'n'go pass. I asked the security, why is it so? I found out that they run out of passes because too many contractors going into Precinct 2. I was like, Hello? How can passes be given to long term contractors until it causes shortage?

I remember earlier on, all contractors would have to pay or buy a one month pass. What has happened? If the contractors can not take care of the passes for one month (again, security guard told me that contractors always loses the pass they make), then, my say is, they lose it, they pay for it, AGAIN. It is only fair, right? Imagine if your friend wanted to visit you and then, they can not come in because there is no pass. Wouldn't that be a bit awkward?

Another thing that I noticed, it used to be that sharp at 6.30 p.m, all renovation works must cease. Nowadays, it is not strictly enforced anymore. Do we keep quiet like the normal Malaysians? Or do we highlight this to the management? Among us, we understood the timing, at one time, when a cabinet installer have to do a bit later than allowed time at a neighbour's place, the neighbour came over and apologise if any disturbance caused. No offence taken of course. But it shows the sincerity and consideration and it is a value that I treasure very much.

Okay, that would be all for the moment, I will ask our pro-tem Penghulu what he thinks about all this and we will follow his wise decision, of course, hehehe.

Well, all of us are aware that the developer, Glenmarie Cove will be throwing a party for the Precinct 2 purchasers. Of course, being the pioneers, most of us received invitations too. I am looking forward to this gathering.

Maiden Entry

Hello there, I am pleased to be blogging about the residential area I am staying in. So far, the people who are my neighbours are friendly. May be it is the lack of fences that make people slightly friendly. After all, with fences around us, we tend to keep to ourselves mostly. Without the fences, people tend to smile more and say hello more often too. It is less stressful and thereupatic to come back to home sweet home in nice neighbourhood like this.
